Screen shots from Internet Explorer
6.
To help you sort out any problems we have put in some screen shots. All you have to do is match the screens in your Internet Explorer with the ones here.
How to check your Internet settings.
From the Windows desktop click START then CONTROL PANEL:

Then, SWITCH TO CLASSIC VIEW to get to this:

Double click Internet options to get:
First make sure the ADDRESS is
HTTP://WWW.RKD.ORG.UK If you want to clear any previous web sites you have been on (history) click CLEAR HISTORY and click YES to any messages. After this click DELETE FILES and click OK to any messages. When you have finished with this screen click on SECURITY then you will see:
Click Internet then Default Level. Now Click Privacy to see:
Under settings set the slider bar so it says Medium on the right. Now click Connections:
If the DIAL-UP- AND VIRTUAL PRIVATE NETWORK SETTINGS box is blank you may be using Broadband (NOT ADSL) or you need to check your Network connections, click BACK at the top of the screen and look at DUN. If it is not blank it should say the name of your Internet Company like the image above. It should also say DEFAULT after it if you have more than one item in the box, if it does not say DEFAULT click on the name (eg FREESERVE) to highlight (turn blue) then click SET DEFAULT. Now make sure there is a dot on ALWAYS DIAL MY DEFAULT CONNECTION. Once all this is done highlight your default connection (eg FREESERVE) and click SETTINGS then you will see a screen with several options the middle will look like this:
Make sure nothing is ticked. If there are any other settings TICKED remove the ticks or text. Click OK. You are back on the connections tab. Click Advanced:
Match this screen with the exception of "ENABLE THIRD PARTY BROWSER EXTENSIONS", this should be UNCHECKED. Click APPLY and OK. Now Restart you PC and try.
How to remove IE6.
From the windows desktop click on Start, then Control panel:

and then ADD/REMOVE PROGRAMS:
Then add/remove windows components. You will then see a screen similar to this:
Look for INTERNET EXPLORER and Uncheck it, then click next and you will see:
Click finish and restart your PC. Now repeat the process ticking INTERNET EXPLORER. This does not always work, so try one of these. Go online here and install all critical updates and service packs. If you have a Windows XP CD. Put it in your PC and click start, run and type sfc /scanow then click OK. A bar will slowly progress, restart your PC after this. Also try leaving your XP CD in your PC and restart tapping the space bar. You will then get three options. Press R, then enter when asked witch windows XP to login and then type your XP administrator password pressing enter after. Now type chkdsk /r Restart your PC after. If this fails you need to reinstall your internet providers (ISP) CD. If this fails consider reinstalling Windows XP.
If you know you did not alter any settings on your PC many problems go away after restarting your PC.
If you are still having problems after checking your Internet settings you need to determine whether you are getting a connection. If you are you will need to go back to the previous page and look at network components. If you are not getting a connection look at DUN and testing your modem.
Many programs conflict with each other so if you get a connection but no internet pages try closing all running programs then use Task manager to close anything you may not be aware about. To do this hold down CTRL+ALT+DEL, then click Processes:
Ignore items with a user name of SYSTEM, LOCAL SERVICE and NETWORK SERVICE. Also Ignore EXPLORER.EXE and TASKMAN.EXE under Image name. Close the rest (On the example you would close: mspaint, minilog, zonealarm, msmsgs, alogserv ONLY) by selecting the item (like mspaint in the example) then click End Process:
Click YES and the item disappears. Repeat the process with other items. Now close Windows Task Manager and try your Internet again.
On Windows XP there is a brilliant tool called system restore where you can go back in time. Try it! Click Start>All programs>Accessories>system tools>system restore. You get this:
Click Next:
On the Calendar, click a date that is in bold or stands out, On the right click a time. A system check point is a very good restore point. Click next:
Click Next and follow this. It will restart your PC and restore files back to as they were.
Useful shortcut keys:
Back to a previous page - Backspace key
Refresh page - F5
Full screen - F11
