The server is preventing access or is rejecting your username and password, check your username and password and try again but otherwise it is a server problem. Send an e-mail to webmaster@[the website address] e.g. webmaster@freeserve.com with the date and time of the error and provide web site addresses that directed you to this site which you are having problems with. |

404 Not found |
The web address you are trying to access cant be found. The address could have been moved or removed. If you were trying to get onto www.theservername.com/page1/article.htm try going to the source page e.g. www.theservername.com If the problem sill persists even after typing in the address or clicking on a link the page could have been moved or the link was set-up incorrectly. |

405 Method Not Allowed |
Try accessing other web pages e.g. www.yahoo.com, www.microsoft.com. If the problem persists on these pages as well then you will need to reinstall Internet Explorer (To reinstall: FIRST you must have a source where you can install I.E. from like a CD for the internet. Double click MY COMPUTER, double click CONTROL PANEL, double click ADD/REMOVE PROGRAMS, single click Microsoft Internet Explorer (It will turn blue), click the ADD/REMOVE button, follow the onscreen instructions and restart your PC when prompted. Now reinstall using your CD/source.), If you CAN access the web pages above then the problem is likely to be with the page that you originally tried. |

Not Acceptable - received when trying to access a web site |
This is caused when a head request has invalid characters in it. Try connecting to another site - if the problem is still encountered try REINSTALLING INTERNET EXPLORER, to do this scroll down to the SCREEN SHOT section and follow 'How to remove IE5' and then install it using the same method and media you used to install it before (e.g.: An ISP CD like Freeserve). |

Proxy Authentication Required - received when trying to access a web site |
This error is similar to 401. This indicates that the client must first authenticate itself with the proxy server. This could be due to invalid proxy settings in Internet Explorer. Try following the section 'How to check your Internet settings' in the SCREEN SHOT section. Look at Proxy settings in particular. |

Request Timed Out - received when trying to access a web site |
This is due to the client not responding within a pre set time. Try clicking refresh or typing in the web site address again. If the problem persists send an e-mail to webmaster@[the website address] eg webmaster@freeserve.com with the date and time of the error and provide web site addresses that directed you to this site which you are having problems with. |

409 Requested Time Out - received when trying to access a web site |
This error should contain enough information for you to solve the problem. If the information supplied does not solve the problem try sending an e-mail to webmaster@[the website address] e.g. webmaster@freeserve.com with the date and time of the error and provide web site addresses that directed you to this site which you are having problems with. |

Gone - received when trying to access a web site |
This is similar to error 404 (Not Found), however this error means that the information has been deleted and the server has no forwarding address. The site you are trying to access has gone; there is no fix. |

Internal Server Error |
Try later - if persists send an e-mail to webmaster@[the website address] e.g. webmaster@freeserve.com with the date and time of the error and provide web site addresses that directed you to this site which you are having problems with. |

Service unavailable |
There are a variety of possibilities: your ISP's server may be down, your company's gateway (the connection between the LAN and the Internet) may be broken, or your own system isn't working. This is usually an easy one: wait a minute and try again. If the error persists, identify the culprit (access provider, gateway, or your system) by process of elimination, start by checking 'How to check your Internet settings' below. |

This occurs when a Gateway machine does not receive a timely response from the upstream server being accessed - Try later |

HTTP Version Not Supported |
This occurs when the server does not support the version of HTTP being used by the client. This error message should include a full list of the other protocols supported by the server. Check the URL for a host number at the end. If there is a host number at the end of the URL try removing it and reconnecting. If this continues happening try sending an e-mail to webmaster@[the website address] e.g. webmaster@freeserve.com with the date and time of the error and provide web site addresses that directed you to this site which you are having problems with. |

Possible corrupt dial-up settings go BACK and click DUN and look for the same error. |

Widows 95 - Error 630 the computer is not receiving a response from the modem. Check that the modem is plugged in and if necessary, turn the modem off and then turn it back on again. |
This behaviour can occur if you are using any type of service provided by your phone company that utilises distinctive dial tones. These types of systems answer incoming calls at a specified number of rings and automatically takes messages for you. When a message is received the service informs you of a stored message by beeping the dial tone when you pick up the line. Once the beeping has stopped, you can dial out normally. The modem detects this as no dial tone or a failed response. |

Possible corrupt dial-up settings go BACK and click DUN and look for the same error. |

Go BACK and click TESTING YOUR MODEM and look for the same error. |

PAGE CANNOT BE DISPLAYED |
The connection to your ISP has either been deleted or set not to be used. Follow suggestions on error page first. Look at 'How to check your Internet settings' below. 1) Check TCP/IP stack: go to START, PROGRAMS, MSDOS PROMPT. At C:\windows type ping 127.0.0.1, press enter. If four reply's come back go to step 2. If an error or REQUEST TIMED OUT comes back go to Start, Settings, Control Panel, Network. Click on TCP/IP, click on remove. Then click on ADD, double click on Protocol; select Microsoft then TCP/IP, Click on OK, OK again. Restart computer. 2) Reinstall Internet Explorer - go to START, SETTINGS, CONTROL PANEL, ADD/REMOVE PROGRAMS, select I.E. 4 or 5 then click ADD/REMOVE, then select REMOVE INTERNET EXPLORER AND ALL COMPONENTS or RESTORE PREVIOUS WINDOWS CONFIGURATION. Once computer restarts run the ISP disk again. If still fails: 3) reinstall Dial up Networking: Go to START, SETTINGS, CONTROL PANEL, ADD/REMOVE PROGRAMS, WINDOWS SETUP TAB, double click on COMMUNICATIONS, un tick DIAL UP NETWORKING, click on OK then APPLY. Restart PC. Once driver information database has been built, double click on COMMUNICATIONS, put tick back in DIAL UP NETWORKING, click OK then Apply. Restart computer and retry. MAKE SURE WINDOWS CD IS AVAILABLE |

Internet Explorer cannot open the Internet site <address>. The connection to the server was reset. This error message can occur if you are NOT using the Microsoft Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) to connect to the Internet or Not using the Microsoft Winsock |
To resolve this look at 'network components' by clicking BACK. Check computer is not connected to a network. For Winsock errors speak to your PC support line. You may also receive the error message if you use the Trumpet Winsock Point-to-Point Protocol (PPP). For information about how to remove Trumpet Winsock PPP from your computer, contact Trumpet. |

This behaviour can occur if a Hosts file with incorrect entries exists in the Windows folder. This problem can occur if you have a damaged or invalid entry in the following registry key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\SecurityProviders\Schannel. The resolution is to remove the above registry entry. You can also go to www.microsoft.com and search for Microsoft Knowledge base article Q259537 |

Internet Explorer 5 Included with Office 2000 Does Not Retain the Automatic Configuration Script Address |
A supported fix that corrects this problem is now available from Microsoft, but it has not been fully regression tested and should be applied only to systems experiencing this specific problem. If you are not severely affected by this specific problem, Microsoft recommends that you wait for the next release of Internet Explorer that contains this fix. If you don’t have IE 5.5 you could download that. |

Internet Explorer no longer prompts for disconnection from Internet Service Provider on exit. |
There is no guaranteed solution for this but try Double clicking My Computer, Control Panel, Internet Options, single click Connection tab, then Advanced - insert check into Disconnect when connection may no longer be needed. You can still disconnect by right clicking on the picture of two green computers next to the click and then DISCONNECT every time. Please let us know if you know how to sort this one out properly. |

How to check your Internet settings.
From the Windows desktop double click

Now you will see the image on the left:
Click CONNECTION to get this>
First make sure the ADDRESS is
HTTP://WWW.RKD.ORG.UK Remember to match all the settings on here. If you want to clear any previous web sites you have been on (history) click CLEAR HISTORY and click YES to any messages. After this click DELETE FILES and click YES to any messages.When you have finished with this screen click on CONNECTION then you will see the image on the right. If the DIAL-UP-SETTINGS box is blank click BACK at the top of the screen and look at DUN. If it is not blank it should say the name of your Internet Company like the image above. It should also say DEFAULT after it if you have more than one item in the box, if it does not say DEFAULT click on the name (eg FREESERVE) to highlight (turn blue) then click SET DEFAULT. Now make sure there is a dot on ALWAYS DIAL MY DEFAULT CONNECTION. Once all this is done highlight your default connection (eg FREESERVE) and click SETTINGS then you will see a screen with several options the middle will look like this:
Make sure USE A PROXY SERVER and BYPASS PROXY SERVER FOR LOCAL ADDRESSES are ticked. If there are any other settings TICKED remove the ticks or text. Now click on ADVANCED and you will see:
On this screen you need to enter your Internet Service Providers (ISP) proxy server settings. If you are using Freeserve you need to type http://www-cache.freeserve.net and 8080 in HTTP and FTP boxes only. When finished click OK then APPLY any changes before closing the screen by clicking OK again.
How to remove IE5.
From the windows desktop click on

and then ADD/REMOVE PROGRAMS:
You will then see a screen similar to this:

Look for MICROSOFT INTERNET EXPLORER or MICROSOFT INTERNET EXPLORER AND INTERNET TOOLS and click on it once so that it is HIGHLIGHTED (in blue) then click ADD/REMOVE and you will see:

Make sure there is a dot on RESTORE THE PREVIOUS WINDOWS CONFIGURATION then press OK and follow the on screen instructions to remove it.
If you know you did not alter any settings on your PC many problems go away after restarting your PC.
If you are still having problems after checking your Internet settings you need to determine whether you are getting a connection. If you are you will need to go back to the previous page and look at network components. If you are not getting a connection look at DUN and testing your modem.

Stop loading a page - ESC
Add a page to FAVOURITES so that you don’t have to remember the address - Click FAVOURITES then ADD to favourites.
Listen to a radio station while on the net - Click VIEW then TOOLBARS and RADIO then choose your station.
In IE6 you have can lock toolbars. To do so click view>toolbars> then click lock toolbars.
